Life around the world

What is life like in India?

Life in India changes every few hundred kilometres: the food, the language on the street signs, the hour people eat dinner. What holds it together is a rhythm of family, tea and festivals that most people there will recognise, whether they live in Mumbai, Kolkata or a small town in Kerala.

An ordinary day

A day in India

Mornings start early in many homes, often with tea and a quick breakfast before work, college or school. In the big cities the commute can be long, by train, bus, metro or auto rickshaw, and it shapes the whole day.

Family sits at the centre of daily life. Many people live with or close to parents and grandparents, and a lot of decisions, from what to cook to what to study, are talked through together.

Dinner tends to be late, often between eight and ten in the evening, and it is usually the meal the household shares. After that, plenty of cities stay awake: street food stalls, evening walks, cricket on a small screen.

Small rituals

The things people do without thinking

  • Chai. A small glass of sweet, milky tea from a roadside stall, any time of day. It is less a drink than an excuse to stop and talk.
  • Festival seasons. Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Pongal, Durga Puja: the calendar is full of them, and they are when families travel home and the streets light up.
  • Cricket. A shared language across the whole country. A big match can quieten an entire city for an afternoon.
  • Visiting without notice. Dropping by a relative or neighbour unannounced is normal, and a guest is offered something to eat almost before they sit down.
Ask someone there

Questions worth asking

The best way to learn what life is like somewhere is to ask someone who lives there, and to listen. These questions tend to open a real conversation:

  • What does an ordinary weekday look like for you, from the first chai to dinner?
  • Which festival matters most in your family, and what do you actually do that day?
  • What is something about your city that people from other parts of India get wrong?
  • What would you cook for a guest who has never been to India?
  • What is changing fastest where you live right now?
