Meaning and connection
Nihilism says nothing has meaning. But if nothing has meaning, why does the loneliness hurt? The very fact that the absence of connection is painful is evidence that something matters. That crack in the nihilist position is where the possibility of emergence lives.
Nihilism and loneliness have a particular relationship. When nothing seems to matter, it is hard to make the effort that connection requires. Why reach out? Why go to the gathering? Why be vulnerable with another person? If nothing has meaning, these investments seem pointless — and so the loneliness deepens. And the loneliness, in turn, reinforces the nihilism: cut off from the experience of genuine connection, the sense that nothing matters becomes harder to contradict.
This is a loop, not a conclusion. It can be entered at either point. Addressing the loneliness — making even one genuine connection — often does more to dissolve the nihilism than any amount of philosophical argument.
Nietzsche is often credited as the philosopher of nihilism, but his life project was actually the overcoming of nihilism — finding a way to affirm existence fully without the support of religious or metaphysical frameworks. The answer he proposed — will to power, the eternal return, amor fati — was not a set of beliefs to adopt but a way of orienting to life. And central to it was the question: what would it look like to genuinely say yes to this moment, these relationships, this existence, without needing cosmic endorsement?
The path out of nihilism is almost always through engagement, not away from it. Engaging honestly with another person — not to convince them of anything, but just to be genuinely present — is one of the most direct forms of that engagement.
